HC Deb 22 May 1930 vol 239 c563
77. Mr. BECKETT

asked the Secretary of State for India how many Indians known to be adherents of the Nationalist movement are now in prison?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Benn)

I have no information from which an answer can be furnished.

Mr. BECKETT

Do I understand my right hon. Friend to say that he has no information as to how many prisoners there are?

Mr. BENN

I could give my hon. Friend the total number of persons who for various reasons are in prison, but, if he asks me for their political opinions, all I can say is that I have not the information.

Mr. BROCKWAY

Is it not the fact that there are more political offenders in Indian prisons now than at any time since the Mutiny?
