HC Deb 22 May 1930 vol 239 cc561-2
36. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the total amount of fines imposed upon motorists for all offences under the Motor Car Acts for the six months ended to the last convenient date; and the number of these prosecutions and fines imposed that were for exceeding the speed limit, giving the figures separately for the Metropolis?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Short)

The latest figures available for England and Wales relate to all motoring offences and to the whole year ended 31st December, 1929. The total amount of fines was £201,315. For exceeding the speed limit 18,724 offences resulted in fines amounting to 237,996; in the Metropolitan Police District and the City, 6,337 offences and fines of £13,965.

Mr. DAY

Has there been an increased activity in the Metropolis during the last six months, and is there any rule as to the speed for which motorists are prosecuted?

Mr. SHORT

Perhaps the hon. Member will put that question down.
