HC Deb 20 May 1930 vol 239 c212
46. Mr. MANDER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is prepared to consider a proposal giving the State power to accept trustee securities or industrial stocks or shares in settlement of Death Duties?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Philip Snowden)

I would remind the hon. Member that under the existing law the taxpayer already enjoys the right of tendering certain Government stocks in settlement of Death Duties. I do not think it would be desirable to extend this right in the manner suggested.

Mr. MANDER

Is the right hon. Gentleman prepared to consider an Amendment on the subject if I put it down on the Finance Bill?

Mr. SNOWDEN

I am not prepared to consider favourably an Amendment which suggests that all kinds of investment stocks should be taken for Death Duties.

Mr. WISE

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider an Amendment for including land under this head?
