HC Deb 20 May 1930 vol 239 cc211-2
45. Mr. THURTLE

asked the Prime Minister if he can now make any further statement with regard to the Channel Tunnel?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the very full reply which I gave on the 13th May in reply to questions on this subject, to which I can add nothing for some time.

Mr. THURTLE

Is not the Prime Minister yet in a position to indicate a date when we are likely to get his decision on this matter?

The PRIME MINISTER

No, I have not yet received a report from the various authorities to which the report of the committee has been referred.

Mr. CHURCHILL

Surely the right hon. Gentleman can give some indication that he expects to be able to give a decision this Session, or this year, or next year?

The PRIME MINISTER

If my right bon. Friend is so very generous that he can give me next year, I will answer him quite emphatically, yes, within that period.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Have the Committee of Imperial Defence, which are considering the matter, had a meeting since 13th May, when the right hon. Gentleman made his last answer?

The PRIME MINISTER

Meetings of the Committee of Imperial Defence are not generally announced, but I can assure the hon. and gallant Member that the committee are not delaying in reporting to me on this question.
