HC Deb 19 May 1930 vol 239 cc14-5
49. Sir NICHOLAS GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Prime Minister whether a reply has been made, and of what nature, to the cablegram sent to him from 102 clergymen of various denominations in the United States calling upon him to seek a way of amicable settlement with Mahatma Gandhi?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

No, Sir; no reply has been sent.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that it is desirable to send a reply and that in that reply there should be an admonition of these well-intentioned people, saying that we are capable of running our own affairs in this country?

Mr. ARTHUR MICHAEL SAMUEL

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that a message sent to us in those terms does harm to the amicable arrangements in these countries?
