HC Deb 14 May 1930 vol 238 cc1868-9
43. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what answer has been returned to the representations received from the French Government in Syria and from the Iraq Government, protesting against the death sentence being carried out on the Arabs sentenced to death; and what steps he has taken in consequence of these representations?

Dr. SHIELS

I am not aware of any representations having been made on the subject by the French Government in Syria. The Prime Minister of Iraq wrote informally to the High Commissioner on the subject a few weeks ago. His views will receive due consideration. As regards the last part of the question, I do not think that I can add anything to the reply which I gave the hon. and gallant Member on the 16th April.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that both Governments are very much worried as to the effect that it will have on their countries if these sentences are carried out?

Dr. SHIELS

As I have pointed out, this matter is in the discretion of the High Commissioner, and I have no doubt that he will take into consideration such facts as the hon. and gallant Member has mentioned.
