§ 12. Mr. LEESasked the Minister of Labour the number of German workers who came to this country during 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929 to install German machines in hosiery and artificial silk factories?
§ Miss BONDFIELDI regret that it is not possible to state separately the numbers of German workmen admitted to this country to install German machinery in hosiery and artificial silk factories. The numbers of German erectors admitted in the years in question for the purpose of erecting machinery of all classes were as follow:
1925 | … | … | … | … | 55 |
1926 | … | … | … | … | 33 |
1927 | … | … | … | … | 95 |
1928 | … | … | … | … | 47 |
1929 | … | … | … | … | 58 |
§ In all these cases the permits are for limited periods only.
§ Mr. DAYCan my right hon. Friend say whether these persons have all returned to their own country now?
§ Miss BONDFIELDMost of them have returned; a few of the permits issued in 1929 are still outstanding.
§ Mr. DAYCan my right hon. Friend say how many of these persons are still remaining in this country?
§ Miss BONDFIELDI must have notice of that question.
§ Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMSIs there any adequate way of seeing that they really do go back?
§ Miss BONDFIELDOh, yes, I think that the check is quite clear.
