HC Deb 13 March 1930 vol 236 c1462
12. Mr. LEES

asked the Minister of Labour the number of German workers who came to this country during 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929 to install German machines in hosiery and artificial silk factories?

Miss BONDFIELD

I regret that it is not possible to state separately the numbers of German workmen admitted to this country to install German machinery in hosiery and artificial silk factories. The numbers of German erectors admitted in the years in question for the purpose of erecting machinery of all classes were as follow:

1925 55
1926 33
1927 95
1928 47
1929 58

In all these cases the permits are for limited periods only.

Mr. DAY

Can my right hon. Friend say whether these persons have all returned to their own country now?

Miss BONDFIELD

Most of them have returned; a few of the permits issued in 1929 are still outstanding.

Mr. DAY

Can my right hon. Friend say how many of these persons are still remaining in this country?

Miss BONDFIELD

I must have notice of that question.

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Is there any adequate way of seeing that they really do go back?

Miss BONDFIELD

Oh, yes, I think that the check is quite clear.
