HC Deb 02 June 1930 vol 239 cc1765-6
58. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the First Commissioner of Works on what date mixed bathing will be permitted for the first time in the Serpentine; and what precautions will be taken to avoid risk to life in respect of non-swimmers?

Mr. LANSBURY

It is expected that the arrangements will be sufficiently advanced to enable mixed bathing to start on the 16th June. As to the latter part of the question, the precautions will be similar to those taken in the past when the Serpentine was very largely used by male bathers.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Does the right hon. Gentleman seriously intend to go on with this fantastic scheme?

Sir ASSHETON POWNALL

Is the First Commissioner of Works going to open proceedings by taking the first plunge himself?

Mr. LANSBURY

I was thinking of asking my right hon. Friend the Member for Epping (Mr. Churchill).
