HC Deb 02 June 1930 vol 239 cc1760-1
50. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Prime Minister whether the economic advantages of a Channel Tunnel have been, or will be, considered by the Economic Advisory Council?

The PRIME MINISTER

The economic aspects of this scheme have been considered by the Economic Advisory Council, and I hope shortly to be able to make a full statement on the Whole subject, including all the problems involved.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Can the Prime Minister assure us that the opinions of this Economic Advisory Council will be given equal weight with those of the Committee of Imperial Defence?

The PRIME MINISTER

Every opinion we have will be given its true weight.

Mr. CHURCHILL

I presume that the right hon. Gentleman contemplates that ultimately—in the not very distant future—this question of the Channel Tunnel shall be remitted to a free vote of the House of Commons?

The PRIME MINISTER

I shall be only too glad to take the House into consultation in that way if it is desired, and if the desire is expressed to me through the usual channels.
