HC Deb 30 July 1930 vol 242 cc461-2
4. Sir KINGSLEY WOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has received any further reports from His Majesty's Ambassador in Moscow on the subject of religious persecution; whether he has any information as to whether any of the laws relating to religion have been repealed or amended; and whether, before the end of the Session, he proposes to make a statement as to the position and the policy of the Government?

Mr. DALTON

My right hon. Friend has nothing to add to his reply of 2nd July, except that he hopes shortly to issue a collection of the Soviet Laws relating to religion in the form of a White Paper.

Sir K. WOOD

Does not the hon. Gentleman think that it would be desirable to answer the last part of the question and state whether it is proposed to make a statement on the present position and policy of the Government, inasmuch as no such statement has been made for twelve months?

Mr. MARJORIBANKS

Is it safe yet for British ministers of religion to go to Russia and practise their vocation and what punishment—[Interruption.]

Mr. FOOT

Will this White Paper be circulated during the Parliamentary Recess; or is there any likelihood that it will be available before the House rises?

Mr. DALTON

We are trying to get out the White Paper as soon as we can. I hope it will be available to Members during the Recess.
