HC Deb 30 July 1930 vol 242 cc464-5
12. Miss PICTON - TURBERVILL

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what financial economies have been effected by the cutting down or annulment of naval building programme since the Government came into office, and the estimated net saving calculated on the building programme under the London Naval Treaty up to 1936?

Mr. ALEXANDER

The reductions effected by the present Government on the building programmes of 1928 and 1929 are estimated at £12,000,000. As regards the second part of the question, the building programmes for the respective years up to 1936 have never been decided upon, and the conditions do not admit of any more definite statement than that contained in Command Paper No. 3547 dated 15th April, 1930.

Miss PICTON-TURBERVILL

Has the right hon. Gentleman any hope that great further economies can be made between now and 1936, since, of course, the present Government will still be in office then?

Mr. SPEAKER

That appears to be an extremely hypothetical question.
