HC Deb 24 July 1930 vol 241 c2377
4. Mr. DIXEY (for Sir VANSITTART BOWATER)

asked the Minister of Labour whether she will state, as nearly as possible, how much per day (including Sundays and holidays) unemployment relief is costing the nation at the present time?

Miss BONDFIELD

The expenditure on unemployment benefit at the present time is about £220,500 a day (including Sundays and holidays); the approximate daily expenditure at present on domiciliary relief to persons in England and Wales who are ordinarily engaged in some regular occupation and their dependants, and on outdoor relief to destitute able-bodied unemployed persons in Scotland, is about £9,300.
