HC Deb 04 December 1930 vol 245 cc2376-7
50. Mr. DAY

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can state the number of children in England and Wales between the ages of five and 16 who were ascertained by the education authorities to be mentally deficient; the number of these who were ascertained to be educable; the number who were ascertained to be ineducable; the number of such children who were attending schools, institutions and other centres; and are there any statistics that will show the number receiving home training?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

According to the latest returns available, 32,775 educable mentally defective children have been ascertained by local education authorities in England and Wales; of these, 28,598 were attending schools or other institutions. I am afraid that I am unable to give figures for ineducable children on a comparable basis, but I am informed that the names of 3,274 children were notified to local authorities under the Mental Deficiency Acts during the year 1929, of whom 352 were sent to:institutions.

Captain CR00KSHANK

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if these schools for mentally deficient children are day schools?
