HC Deb 16 April 1930 vol 237 c2896
44. Major COLVILLE

asked the President of the Board of Trade to what extent the output of wrapping paper in this country has increased since the beginning of 1929?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

As was indicated in the reply to a question put by the hon. and gallant Member on 4th March, the information supplied by the National Association of Packing and Wrapping Paper Makers does not cover the total output of dutiable wrapping paper. The figures available, which relate to the out, put of firms whose returns in 1924 covered about three-fifths of the total output of such paper, show the following variations in output in the course of 1929:

Tons.
January—March 42,497
April—June 41,556
July—September 42,363
October—December 46,460
Major COLVILLE

Is it not the case that the output of British mills has, in fact, increased by about 55 per cent. since this industry was safeguarded?

Mr. SMITH

That is not the question on the Paper.

Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND-TROYTE

Is it not a fact that there has been a great increase in employment in this industry since the duty was imposed?
