HC Deb 16 April 1930 vol 237 c2887
30. Mr. MARJORIBANKS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the proportions of Jewish and Arab population in Jerusalem?

Dr. SHIELS

I regret that I have not the necessary figures to enable me to answer this question precisely, but it will be seen from page 7 of the report of the Commission of Inquiry that Jerusalem is now estimated to have a small majority of Jewish inhabitants.

Mr. MARJORIBANKS

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the Arabs have a very large majority on the municipal council; and will he take some steps to inquire into this matter and to redress the balance, if possible?

Dr. SHIELS

While I note what the hon. Member says, I am not prepared to accept the accuracy of his statement.
