HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1696-7
10. Mr. BOWEN

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether the telephone construction works of £750,000, which are now contemplated, are additional to the normal programme of the year?

The POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Mr. Lees-Smith)

I have been asked to reply. Yes, Sir, they are an acceleration. The authorised construction programme for the current year amounts to £10,500,000. Works estimated to cost £750,000 in addition to this authorised programme have now been sanctioned and will be put in hand forthwith.

Mr. HARRIS

Are these revenue-producing works, and are they likely to prove profitable?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

Yes, Sir. The financial aspect was most carefully considered before the Department sent the proposals forward.
