HC Deb 11 November 1929 vol 231 cc1498-9
10. Mr. BROCKWAY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the desirability of extending the attitude of goodwill following the recent declaration of the Viceroy, he will con- sult with the Indian Government for the purpose of securing a review of the cases of political offenders now in prison and granting an amnesty wherever compatible with the prevention of violence?

Mr. BENN

I regret that I can take no action in this matter.

12. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he can make any statement about the future treatment of political prisoners and political offences in British India?

Mr. BENN

A comprehensive inquiry is being made as to the treatment of prisoners, but I can make no statement on the matter at present.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Will my right hon. Friend let me know when he is in a position to make a statement?

Mr. BENN

Gladly; as soon as the inquiry is over, I shall be glad to give my hon. and gallant Friend and the House full particulars.
