HC Deb 04 November 1929 vol 231 cc596-7
62. Mr. HASLAM

asked the Minister of Agriculture if, in view of the effects of the drought and the difficulties facing British agriculture, the Government will reconsider their decision and allow, if only as a temporary measure, the War Office, Admiralty, and Air Ministry to make additional purchases of British products for the provisioning of the Forces during the next few months?

Mr. N. BUXTON.

The Government is unable to reconsider its decision on this matter.

Mr. HASLAM

Does that mean that the Government, even as a temporary measure are unprepared to make the smallest additional purchases of home raised stock to assist British farmers so hard pressed at the present time?

Mr. BUXTON

I must refer the hon. Member to the answer which I have given.

Mr. HASLAM

May I ask whether the definite large losses of British stock breeders, on account of the drought, have been brought to the attention of the right hon. Gentleman?

Mr. BUXTON

The hon. Member's question refers to the intention of the Government. I have answered that and I am afraid I cannot add anything to it.

Mr. HAYCOCK

In view of the fact that there are no profits for farming, may I ask how much land is being given away?
