HC Deb 04 November 1929 vol 231 c610
66. Mr. EDE

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many applications have been made to his Department for sanction to the enclosure of common land under Section 194 of the Law of Property Act, 1925; in how many cases an inquiry has been held by his Department; in how many cases consent has been given; and whether in any such case consent has been given without an undertaking that at least an equivalent area of land to that enclosed shall be thrown into the common?

Mr. N. BUXTON

The number of applications received by the Ministry for its consent under Section 194 of the Law of Property Act, 1925, is 21. In three of these cases a local inquiry was held. The consent applied for was given in 13 cases. In 11 of these cases the consent was given without an undertaking that at least an equivalent area should be thrown into the common. In five of the 11 cases, where the addition of an equivalent area was not required, there was no complete inclosure so as to exclude the public, and in the remaining six cases the in-closures were of small extent, ranging from 55 square yards to 4½ perches.
