HC Deb 06 May 1929 vol 227 c1932
2. Mr. THURTLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India what action has been taken on the representations recently received by the Government of India suggesting that the circulation of Mr. Ian Colvin's Life of General Dyer should be forbidden in India?

Earl WINTERTON

I have not heard of any such representations.

Mr. THURTLE

Is the Noble Lord not aware that the "Pioneer" newspaper wrote to the Governor-General of India specifically drawing attention to the un-desirability of the circulation of this book?

Earl WINTERTON

The "Pioneer" newspaper being an extremist newspaper I am not in the least surprised, but it has nothing whatever to do with me.

Mr. THURTLE

What does the Noble Lord mean by "an extremist newspaper "?

Earl WINTERTON

A newspaper supporting views similar to those held by the hon. Gentleman.

Mr. THURTLE

I thank the Noble Lord for his compliment.
