asked the Secretary for Mines the average pit-head proceeds per ton of coal disposable commercially for each month from October, 1928, to the latest available date?

The figures are approximately as follow: October, 1928, 13s. 3d.; November, 13s. 3d.; December, 13s. 9d. January, 1929, 13s. 11d.; and February, 14s. 1d. The full figures for March are not yet available, but the indications are that there was a further increase during that month.

asked the Secretary for Mines what was the tonnage of coal exported during the first four months of 1929 and the corresponding figure for 1928?

The quantity of coal exported during the first four months of 1929 was approximately 17,876,000 tons, as compared with 15,745,000 tons during the corresponding period of 1928.

28. Sir EDWARD ILIFFE

asked the Secretary for Mines the pit-head profit or loss per ton of coal disposable commercially during each quarter of 1928, and such figures as are available for 1929?

In 1928 there were losses of the following amounts per ton:—March Quarter, 9d. June Quarter, 1s. 5d., September Quarter, 1s. 4d., and December Quarter, 3d. In 1929 there was an estimated profit of 7d. in January and 9d. in February. There are indications that the results for March will be still more favourable, but the full figures are not yet available.
