HC Deb 14 March 1929 vol 226 cc1262-3
31. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Health how many of the slum-clearance schemes which have been approved since January 1925 have been completed; and how many tenants have been rehoused?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

By the end of 1928, nine of the slum clearance schemes which had been approved since January 1925 had been completed. Rehousing accommodation for 2,345 persons was provided in connection with these schemes. In addition, in the case of 15 schemes, the houses necessary for the accommodation of the 4,649 persons to be displaced, have already been erected, although the whole of the demolition of the unhealthy area has not been completed.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied with the progress of these slum clearance schemes?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No, Sir; not at all.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what steps he is taking to get more satisfactory progress?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I will tell the hon. Member when we come back after the General Election.
