HC Deb 17 December 1929 vol 233 c1172
15. Mr. DAY

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether, in view of the numbers of unemployed at present in the borough of Southwark, he has any special schemes to relieve the unemployment during the coming winter in this district?

The LORD PRIVY SEAL (Mr. J. H. Thomas)

I have nothing to add to the reply given to my hon. Friend on 10th December.

Mr. DAY

May I ask whether negotiations are going on with the Borough of Southwark at the present time?

Mr. THOMAS

I do not know the state of the negotiations, but I know that there was an application.

Mr. MILLS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Southwark and many other constituencies near to this House have a very unpleasant habit of dumping their refuse in our Divisions in Kent, and could he not consider the erection of a refuse destructor such as the Labour council at Woolwich use, with profit for themselves and the ratepayers?

Mr. THOMAS

I am sure that the influence of my hon. Friend will persuade his own local authority to make an application, which will be considered.

Mr. MILLS

We already possess one.
