HC Deb 30 April 1929 vol 227 cc1373-4
23. Sir HARRY BRITTAIN

asked the Minister of Transport what is the present position of progress of the Western Avenue; and whether he can make any statement as to the probable date of completion of this road?

Colonel ASHLEY

The total length of the projected road is 13 miles of which 4¼ miles are already completed. Two railway bridges now under construction by the Middlesex County Council will, I hope, be finished in five or six weeks' time enabling a further length of 1½ miles of road to be opened to traffic. With regard to the remainder of the route, as soon as revised estimates have been fully examined I hope to arrange with the Middlesex County Council for further work to be put in hand. At the present juncture, however, I cannot forecast a date for the completion of the entire route.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Will the right hon. and gallant Gentleman consider changing the name of Western Avenue which is very misleading, seeing that we have already the great West Road?
