HC Deb 24 April 1929 vol 227 cc872-3
31. Mr. WESTWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the maximum age for retiral of a police surgeon appointed for medical examination of and attendance on the police force?

Sir J. GILMOUR

No maximum retiral age has been prescribed for police surgeons as a class, and I have no information as to the age at which they normally retire in different districts.

Mr. WESTWOOD

If it is right for the police officers to retire on reaching the maximum age of 65, is it right for police surgeons to remain on until they are almost 75 years of age?

Sir J. GILMOUR

That is a matter for the local authority.

Mr. WESTWOOD

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries into the conditions in the Kirkcaldy district, where I understand there is a police surgeon who is a long way over 70 years of age?

Sir J. GILMOUR

My office has, I understand, no jurisdiction in these matters.
