HC Deb 26 March 1928 vol 215 cc805-6
35. Mr. KELLY

asked the Minister of Labour what steps his Department is taking to deal with the unemployment of juveniles; and will any scheme for transferring juveniles to work in districts away from their home be made known to the public?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

In general, unemployment among juveniles is not heavy, but in certain areas it constitutes a problem. Juvenile Unemployment Centres are established where the need exists and special steps have been taken to open such centres in certain of the mining areas. Efforts are being made to find vacancies for juveniles from these areas, and the machinery of the Employment Exchanges and the Juvenile Committees is being utilised for this purpose, but there is nothing in the nature of a formal scheme of transfer.

Mr. KELLY

In the event of the transference of juvenile workers from one part of the country to another, is care taken for their proper supervision?

Mr. BETTERTON

I should like to have notice of that question. I should not care to answer it without giving the hon. Member full information as to what is done.

Mr. KELLY

May I ask whether any Reports have been received by his Department with reference to the Circular he issued on the transference of juveniles?

Mr. BETTERTON

Again I would ask the hon. Member to put that question down.
