asked the Minister of Health the amount paid in out-relief to able-bodied persons during each of the last four years by the Poor Law Unions of England and Wales?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The amounts paid in out-relief in money and kind by boards of guardians in England and Wales to persons ordinarily engaged in some regular occupation and their dependants during the years 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927 were £5,360,000, £5,600,000, £14,980,000 and £7,320,000, respectively. Figures based on the classification of "able-bodied" persons are not available.
