HC Deb 22 March 1928 vol 215 c558
51. Sir ASSHETON POWNALL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the main items which have contributed to the total of £80,000,000 recently estimated as the cost to the Exchequer of the general strike and the coal dispute?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The principal particulars were given in the Budget speech on the 11th April last year. The figure of £80,000,000 referred to includes the expenditure on the coal subsidy. There is unhappily reason to believe that the ultimate aggregate loss will prove even greater.
