asked the Secretary for Mines how many coal mines have been closed in Lancashire since 31st January,1927; and how many workers were thrown out of employment as a result of the closing of these mines?

28 pits, normally employing 3,824 wage earners, have been closed and not reopened since 31st January,1927.

Mr. PALING

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether his Department has any policy to prevent these constant stoppages of men?
