HC Deb 22 March 1928 vol 215 cc544-5
20. Mr. MACQUISTEN

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will inquire into the circumstances of the death of the son of Mrs. Maggie Potts, of Oulton, Wigton, Cumberland, who was a healthy child in Oulton School until, without the consent and in spite of the protests of his mother, he was operated on for tonsils and adenoids with the result that he died; and under what authority was such action taken?

Lord E. PERCY

I have already received a report on this case from the school medical officer, and I am sending my hon. Friend a copy. I understand that the concurrence of the boy's mother was obtained before the operation was performed. The boy was operated upon at a hospital by a specialist; be was kept in the hospital for two nights after the operation, and was apparently quite well when discharged. I am advised that death was due to complications which subsequently arose, and that this regret- table occurrence was not due to any defect or failure in the authority's arrangements for treatment.
