Mr. LANSBURYasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether all the provincial Governments have replied to the circular letter issued by the Government of India requesting the local Governments to obtain information on the extent of the practice by which employers in industrial concerns inflict fines on their workmen; if not, which of the provincial Governments have not yet forwarded the requisite information to the central Government; and whether, in view of the evidence already in possession of the Government of India, it is contemplating the introduction of legislation at an early date designed to limit and regulate this practice?
§ Earl WINTERTONThe answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The Government of India are 979 examining the replies of the local Governments with a view to deciding whether legislation is advisable.
