HC Deb 27 February 1928 vol 214 c42
84. Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether it is intended that the drawings of the Turner Bequest shall continue to be retained in the Tate Gallery; and whether he will propose to the responsible keepers their removal to a more suitable home, such as the British Museum?

Mr. SAMUEL

These drawings have been removed to a safe place in the Tate Gallery. I see no sufficient reason for proposing their removal to another gallery or museum.

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if the place to which they have been removed is a suitable place, and accessible to students?

Mr. SAMUEL

I cannot say offhand anything further, but I will make inquiries, and, if the hon. Gentleman will allow me, I will communicate with him.

Sir H. BRITTAIN

Is there any reason why some of these pictures should not be lent to some of the provincial picture galleries? Up to the present time they have always lain in cellars, first in the cellars of the National Gallery, and then in the cellars of the Tate Gallery.

Mr. SAMUEL

If provincial galleries will apply for them, I am sure the trustees will treat such applications with every sympathy.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Will the right hon. Gentleman move some of the pictures of the Lane Collection back to Dublin, where they were originally?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

Will the hon. Gentleman see that the drawings of the Turner Bequest are all kept together?

Mr. SAMUEL

I will make representations in that sense.
