HC Deb 27 February 1928 vol 214 cc33-4
69. Captain WATERHOUSE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if any proposals for the removal of His Majesty's Forces from the neighbourhood of Cairo are under consideration?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

I must ask my hon. and gallant Friend to wait until I can lay papers on the subject of my conversations with the Egyptian Prime Minister. I will lay them at the earliest possible moment.

Captain WATERHOUSE

Meanwhile, will the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that no other action will be taken without consulting this House?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

If there be any treaty proposed between the Egyptian Government and His Majesty's Government it will not be ratified until the approval of Parliament has been obtained.

Captain WATERHOUSE

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman give some further assurance that the House will be consulted before such a definite and rather revolutionary line of policy is adopted?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

If I say that no agreement will be ratified without the approval of the House—well, I have already given the undertaking for which my hon. and gallant Friend asks.
