HC Deb 20 December 1928 vol 223 c3194
9. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Home Secretary whether any automatic electrically-controlled traffic signals are in operation in the Metropolitan Police district; and, if they have not yet been introduced, whether, having regard to the small cost as compared with the cost of police control, he will consider introducing them?

Captain MARGESSON (Lord of the Treasury)

I have been asked to reply on behalf of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport. Electric light signals are and have been for a considerable time in use in Piccadilly. They are not, however, automatic in the sense that police control can be dispensed with. The question of experiments with automatic signals is under active consideration, and the results of any such experiments must be awaited before it is possible to decide whether police control can be eliminated or reduced by such means.

Mr. DAY

Is the hon. and gallant Member aware that the Piccadilly signals are seldom working?

Mr. LUNN

Will the hon. and gallant Member ask the Home Secretary if he has had any report on these automatic signals from Leeds, where I believe they are working satisfactorily?

Captain MARGESSON

Certainly.
