HC Deb 03 December 1928 vol 223 cc814-5
21. Mr. RENNIE SMITH

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department if his attention has been called to the proposed development of basic industries, such 'as iron, steel, and chemical works, in connection with the reconstruction scheme of the Nationalist Government of China; and what steps he is taking to encourage British trade in this connection?

Mr. DOUGLAS HACKING (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The answer to the first part is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, it is considered that their development is not yet sufficiently advanced for the Department to encourage British traders to participate in these schemes, but the position is being carefully watched by His Majesty's representatives in China.
