HC Deb 03 April 1928 vol 215 c1793
47. Lieut.-Colonel GAULT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will consider reducing the excise and placing a countervailing export duty on whiskey in order that the taxation from this source may be borne by the foreign instead of the home consumer?

Mr. SAMUEL

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer which the Chancellor of the Exchequer gave on 21st February to the hon. and gallant Member for Chelmsford (Colonel Howard-Bury).

Lieut.-Colonel GAULT

Has my hon. Friend any information concerning the rumour that Scotch whiskey, that is whiskey distilled in Scotland, can be procured at a lower price in New York than in London?

Mr. SCRYMGEOUR

Is not this business, like death, without respect to persons?
