§ 62. Captain CAZALETasked the Postmaster-General whether the Post Office will consider the issuing of a 4½d. stamp in view of the fact that registration costs 3d. and the ordinary postal rate for letters is 1½d., and that the issue of a stamp of this value would be of great convenience to business firms?
§ Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSONThere are eight denominations of stamps under 6d. in value, and I do not think that the expense of issuing a further denomination could be justified, particularly as registered envelopes embossed with a stamp to the value of 4½d. are sold at all post offices.
§ Captain CAZALETIs my right hon. Friend aware that there was an issue of 4½d. stamps in 1892, and that the use of these stamps would not only be a convenience to the public, but an economy to the Post Office?
§ Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSONIf I could be assured on the last point, I should view it in another light, but I would remind my hon. and gallant Friend that the financial conditions now are unhappily very different from what they were in 1892.
