HC Deb 29 November 1927 vol 211 cc236-7
54. Mr. HARMSWORTH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that on the 21st October last a joint meeting of the Federation of Master Cotton Spinners and the Spinners' and Manufacturers' Association declared itself strongly in favour of the renewal of the Cotton Industry Act involving a levy of 6d. per bale on imported foreign cotton in the interests of British Empire-grown cotton; and whether he will consider the question of renewing that Act?

Captain HACKING

I have been asked to reply. The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I understand that the matter is still under consideration by the parties concerned. I would view with sympathy any proposal for continuing the Act.
