HC Deb 09 November 1927 vol 210 c189
Sir W. DAVISON

(by Private Notice) asked the Minister of Health whether he has received complaints from any local authorities of pauper citizens of the Irish Free State having become chargeable to them, and that under the existing law such persons cannot be returned to their domicile of origin in the Irish Free State; and whether he intends to take any action in the matter?

Sir K. WOOD

My right hon. Friend has received representations to this effect from several boards of guardians and is in communication with the Dominions Office upon the subject.

Sir W. DAVISON

Will my hon. Friend be able to reply if I put a question down in a week's time? He will recognise the seriousness of the matter in view of the heavy taxation on British goods which is being imposed by the Irish Free State, thereby causing unemployment.

Sir K. WOOD

I will communicate with my hon. Friend on the matter.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is the hon. Gentleman also looking into the question whether there are any paupers from Northern Ireland chargeable to the rates?

Sir K. WOOD

Perhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will put a question down.
