HC Deb 26 May 1927 vol 206 cc2172-3
49. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the Prime Minister if he is aware that the French Chamber have passed the Bill for the ratification of the Washington Eight-Hour Day Convention with the proviso, inserted by the Senate, that the Convention should only take effect after ratification by Germany and Britain; and if he can state whether it is now the intention of the Government to pursue a similar course?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

I have been asked to reply. The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part of the question, I regret that I am not able at present to add anything to the reply given to the hon. Member for the Sutton Division on 19th May.

Mr. THORNE

Does the hon. Gentleman think he will be able to give any definite reply in the next two or three months?

Mr. BETTERTON

The hon. Member can repeat the question at any time. At present I can add nothing to the answer I have given.

Mr. THORNE

Is the hon. Gentleman not aware that the Convention has been ratified by the other countries but, in consequence of the inaction of our Government, cannot be put into operation?
