§ 7. Mr. H. WILLIAMSasked the Home Secretary when taximeter cabs in London will be provided with meters showing the correct fares?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSSix types of taximeters have been submitted for approval and, as far as police requirements are concerned, are satisfactory. These type taximeters are at present in the hands of the National Physical Laboratory for the necessary tests before they can be certified as fit for use. It cannot be definitely stated when the new meters will be available for distribution to taxicab proprietors.
§ Colonel DAYWill the right hon. Gentleman consider the question of having the figures on the taximeters black on white or white on black, so that they can be read easily at nighttime, as the yellow figures cannot be seen?
§ Lieut.-Colonel HOWARD-BURYWill the right hon. Gentleman see that the new taximeters are more legible, and especially that they are better lighted at night-time?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSYes; after a question on this subject which was put in the House a month ago I communicated with the Commissioner of Police and asked him to pay special attention to this point.
§ Mr. MACQUISTENHas the right hon. Gentleman not taken advice from the Colonies? Is he aware that in Canada the taximeter figures are inside the cab and they are visible, and visible from the outside also, so that people can see them at once without having to peer through a glass screen?
