HC Deb 26 May 1927 vol 206 c2149
8. and 9. Mr. RHYS

asked the Home Secretary (1) whether the Government propose, during the life of the present Parliament, to grant facilities for the passage into law of proposals for the compulsory fixing of the terminal hour for the sale of intoxicating liquor in public houses;

(2) whether, in view of the growing discontent of the public and the licensed trade, the Government propose to favourably consider the introduction of legislation restoring the privileges of the bona fide traveller?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I will answer these questions together. These points, with others, will have to be considered in connection with any general review of licensing questions, and I cannot make any statement at present.

Mr. RHYS

Is it the intention of the Government to undertake any review of the licensing question this Session?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

There is no possibility of any legislation on the licensing question this Session.

Mr. SCRYMGEOUR

Would there not be a danger, in the introduction of such legislation, of taking away the privileges of the bona fide traveller?

Lieut. - Colonel Sir FREDERICK HALL

Can something be done to make the closing hours in London uniform?

Lieut.-Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the public are getting very tired of this grandmotherly legislation.

Viscountess ASTOR

No.

Mr. KIRKWOOD

It is quite evident, Mr. Speaker, that the hon. and gallant Member for Chelmsford (Lieut.-Colonel Howard-Bury) is put up by the Home Secretary to put these questions.
