HC Deb 25 May 1927 vol 206 c1995
28. Sir ROBERT THOMAS

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that there is neglect on the part of local authorities to ensure the provision of adequate means of ventilation in theatres, cinemas, and other places of public assembly; and whether he will appoint a Committee to inquire into this matter?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Captain Hacking)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. A Circular was sent in 1920 to the licensing authorities urging them to use their powers under the Theatres Act, 1843, to ensure the satisfactory condition of theatres including ventilation. The Home Office have not received any complaints in recent years. If the hon. Member will send me any information he has in his possession, I will consider it.

Sir R. THOMAS

Is the hon. and gallant Member not aware that certain Members of this House are withering away owing to lack of ventilation, and will he appoint a Committee to inquire into the matter?

Captain HACKING

I am very sorry that the hon. Member has got to that condition himself. I am afraid his appearance would not justify the setting up of a Committee.

Colonel DAY

Is it not a fact that if any one makes a complaint to the local police it receives immediate attention?

Captain HACKING

Oh, yes, it always receives immediate attention from the local police, as it does from the Home Office.
