HC Deb 24 May 1927 vol 206 cc1831-2
52. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet discussed with the Governor and decided upon the representation of the natives by a native on the Advisory Native Land Board and Trust Board in Kenya?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

No, Sir. I am awaiting the receipt of the draft legislation on the subject.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Secretary of State for the Colonies stated that he would take an early opportunity, as soon as the Governor of Kenya returned to this country, to discuss the matter with him; has he now changed his mind about that and is he awaiting further information?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

No, my right hon. Friend has spoken to the Governor of Kenya about this matter and we have had a general discussion in which the Governor of Kenya informed my right hon. Friend that before he left the Colony he had instructed the Attorney-General to prepare a specific draft of the legislation. That is being done, and it is expected that that draft will be here before the Governor returns, and that there will be an opportunity of discussing this matter on the definite draft.
