HC Deb 05 May 1927 vol 205 c1747
6. Mr. W. BAKER

asked the Home Secretary whether he will give the date on which he issued his instructions to the police with regard to smoke, steam, and sparks from motor lorries; and whether he will state the number of cases in which drivers and owners have been warned and the number of cases in which further action has been taken?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The memorandum which I promised to issue was sent to all chief officers of police on 10th March last, but I regret that I have no information as to the action which they may have taken throughout the country since that date.

Mr. BAKER

Seeing that no improvement has taken place with regard to this complaint, will the right hon. Gentleman cause inquiries to be made?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

We have only had six weeks yet. I think the hon. Member might give a little time to see the effect of the Circular. He can call my attention to it again in the course of the Session.
