HC Deb 05 May 1927 vol 205 cc1740-1
13. Colonel DAY

asked the Minister of Health what steps his Department has taken to prevent burials taking place in the Tooting parish church graveyard; and whether instructions have been given that further burials in this graveyard shall be stopped?

The MINISTER of HEALTH (Mr. Chamberlain)

It seemed desirable to hold a public inquiry before deciding to close any portion of the churchyard, and this inquiry will be held on the 20th instant.

Colonel DAY

Does not the right hon. Gentleman see that a graveyard of this kind which exposes coffins to the public view after burial should be closed at once, especially in view of the fact that many complaints have come in direct from the authorities?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

No. My view is that there should be an inquiry first.
