HC Deb 05 May 1927 vol 205 c1740
12. Captain CROOKSHANK

asked the President of the Board of Education what is the estimate of expenditure on schools and other educational buildings this year; and what were the corresponding figures in the last financial year?

Duchess of ATHOLL

My right hon. Friend is sending my hon. and gallant Friend a statement showing the proposals for capital expenditure approved by the Board for a series of years up to the year ended 31st March, 1926, when the amount of such approved proposals was £6,015,215. For the year ended 31st March, 1927, the corresponding amount was £5,938,763. My right hon. Friend is afraid that he cannot at this date form any reliable estimate of the probable figures for the year ending March next.

Captain CROOKSHANK

In view of the need for a reduction in current expenditure, will the Noble Lady ask her right hon. Friend to consider the possibility of financing the building expenditure of schools by means of loans with a sinking fund?

Duchess of ATHOLL

These proposals are all financed by loans.
