§ 57. Sir WILLIAM DAVISONasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government has received the sum agreed to be paid by the Hankow Government for the looting of British property which took place at Kiukiang?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINAs was stated in the reply returned to the hon. and gallant Gentleman the Member for Central Southwark on 16th March, a note purporting to cover a cheque for £40,000 in settlement of losses suffered by British subjects at Kiukiang was handed to Mr. O'Malley by Mr. Chen on 2nd March. Four or five days later Mr. Chen handed over the cheque itself.
§ Sir W. DAVISONIs it incorrect to say this cheque has been dishonoured. Has the money been received or has the cheque gone through?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINThat is a question I cannot answer. I am sorry to say I do not know.
§ 53. Captain FANSHAWEasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Nationalist Government has implemented the agreement with regard to the late British concession at Kiukiang; and what steps His Majesty's Government proposes to take to safeguard British interests there?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINI have received no information of any breach of the Agreement regarding Kiukiang by the Nationalist authorities. As regards the second part of his question, I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply returned to Lay hon. Friend the Member for South-East Essex on 21st March.
