HC Deb 02 May 1927 vol 205 cc1268-9
60. Sir FREDRIC WISE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any British Consulates on the Yangtse have been damaged or looted during the last few months; if so, what is the extent of the damage; and what steps he proposes to take to obtain compensation?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

The Consul-General at Nanking reports that the Consulate-General there has been "completely gutted." The Consulate at Chinkiang has also been occupied by troops of the Sixth Army, but I have not yet received any information as to the extent of any damage or looting that may have taken place. It has been necessary to evacuate the Consulates at Chengtu, Chungking, Ichang and Changsha, and I have no knowledge of what may have happened to them after evacuation. I cannot at present answer the last part of the question.

Mr. LOOKER

Is it proposed to claim any compensation for any of the incidents referred to?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

I have just said I cannot at present answer the last part of the question.
