HC Deb 02 May 1927 vol 205 cc1259-60
36. Mr. TAYLOR

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any information he can impart to the House as to the progress of the debt settlement negotiations between France and Russia; and whether any principles have been conceded in the Russian offer which would be acceptable to His Majesty's Government as a basis for the opening of negotiations between Britain and Russia?

The SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Sir Austen Chamberlain)

The Franco-Russian negotiations in Paris are still in progress, and no debt settlement has yet been effected. His Majesty's Government have no information as to the Soviet Government having made any concessions of principle.

Mr. TAYLOR

Has the right hon. Gentleman not seen the announcement in the newspapers that a provisional agreement has been reached, and is there any truth in that suggestion?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

I see a great deal in the newspapers for the truth of which I should not care to vouch.

Mr. TAYLOR

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether a provisional agreement has been reached or not?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

As far as I know, no such agreement has been reached.
